Quick update

Duncan's cutest words
  • "Ta" short for chetta, this is what he calls Xander.
  • "Gum" this means "I'm done with this, take it".

Duncan's eye was better after Monday. Now he has had a cough for the last 4 days. It is waking everyone up at night and making us sleepy during the day.

Xander is getting good at putting/holding his head under water in the pool. He practiced a bunch at Uncle Dave's house this last weekend.

Duncan got a mosquito bite on his eye yesterday and his eye is almost swollen shut. We're giving him Benadryl and some cold compresses to ease the swelling. He looks so pathetic!

Last night I wasn't in the mood for leftover pasta with pesto, so I suggested adding bacon to it. Tina suggested making a bacon salad dressing to top a spinach salad instead. I'm glad we did, it was delicious: Cook 6 slices of chopped bacon until all the fat is rendered, reserve the crisped meat and cook a crushed garlic clove with about 1/4 cup of chopped onion (shallots would be best) until tender, then add 1/2 cup cider vinegar and 1 tbsp ketchup and salt and pepper to taste. Boil to reduce and then pour hot over 1 pound of raw spinach. Add the bacon bits. We found a hard-boiled egg completed the salad. Delicious!

Plus, I just put up pictures from Grandma and Grandpa's visit on the main page.

Grandma and grandpa were visiting this weekend. They just left this morning (very early at 4am) and we had a great time. Mostly Xander and Duncan had a great time playing with grandpa (or Pa as Duncan said). They wore Grandpa out running around playing good guys vs. bad guys and having darkside parties. Duncan insisted that Pa put him to bed every night.

We also went to the new Cabela's in Buda and everyone had a great time. I'm not really into outdoor sporting activities (campin', huntin', etc.) but I enjoyed the store. They have rooms filled with stuffed animals (not the cuddly kind) including elephants and zebras and some mutant deer that creep me out when I think about them. They also have a laser shooting range which we all tried except Xander, because he was scared (it was dark and there were spooky animal noises).

Mom and I did a little crafting and went to the scrapbook store and we all drank tons of homemade gingerale.

I did have trouble sleeping on our new sofa bed (see earlier post) - it hurt my back. So now I'm pissed that I got a crappy couch. We are going to wait until Anjamma comes to visit. We will let her sleep on it and tell us if she thinks it is worth keeping. You better get a lot of rest before you come to visit, Anjamma. The boys are going to have you running around a lot!

I made homemake gingerale this weekend from a ginger syrup and club soda. It was pretty good - very ginger-y. We are trying to recreate a drink we had in Chicago with gingerale and gin. We just have to get some gin.

I love watching Duncan chew. It is the cutest thing. Xander was never a cute chewer. Duncan is also a better chewer than Xander was. Xander would choke on pasghetti if we did not chop it up, but Duncan can slurp it up and swallow it with no problem.

Bheesh shaved his head again. No comment.

Grandma and Grandpa are coming to visit this weekend. We are going to go to the new Cablea's store in Buda. I gave Xander a Cabela's catalog to look at to get him interested before we go. He tore out about 50 pages and I'm still finding them all around the house (under the couch cushions).

Little things

Wednesday I took the boys to Sonic on the way home from daycare. Xander wanted a green drink (he orders all his drinks by color not flavor) and I ordered a strawberry-limeaid thinking it would be green. It was not green, it was red - my bad. I explained to Xander that it was my fault, I thought the drink was going to be green and we would get him a green drink next week. I was expecting a major blowout, but Xander seemed to settle himself down and he said "I give up" and he took the red drink!

I took the boys the pool yesterday and Xander enjoyed swimming around the big pool with his new noodle wrapped around his body. This was much nicer than holding both boys in the big pool.

Duncan likes to crawl around and pretend he is a dog. He can say yes now, "Yesh", but you have to prompt him to say it. He will also say "be back" when he leaves to tell you that he will be right back. He really likes to emphasize the last consonant sound of words. He can say "cu-ph" for cup, but says "great" for grape. Duncan likes to sing a dance. He will sing twinkle, twinkle little star and ABC (mostly just saying the last sound of each line) and he knows some of the Spiderman song by Weird Al.

Duncan is a thumb sucker. But does not seem to prefer one thumb to the other. If you take one thumb out of his mouth and hold it, he will put the other thumb in instead. He also likes to play with his ear with one hand while sucking the thumb of the other hand. If he is really serious, he will suck his thumb with one hand and wrap his other hand around the back of his head to play with the ear on the same side as the thumb he is sucking.
